Electric trucks: calculate, don’t guess

A 40-tonne articulated truck costs around €84 per 100 km on diesel including tolls, and around €32 electric when charged at the depot. Whether the switch pays off for your fleet depends on duty profile, depot electricity, residual value and the charging network – not the range quoted at the trade show. The truckoo Electric Hub brings together the points that matter for the decision: live market prices, profile check, a TCO calculator built on transparent step-by-step maths, a route planner across real truck charging parks, incentives, vehicles and the IAA 2026 wrap-up. As of September 2026, Germany, all figures net of VAT.

The picture today: diesel versus electricity

Energy cost per 100 km for a 40-tonne articulated truck, calculated with current market prices: 28 litres of diesel × net price plus tolls versus 115 kWh × the electricity mix from depot and public charging. Updated every working day.

The topics of the Electric Hub

Every page answers one decision question – with figures, the calculation behind them and sources.

Three steps to a decision

1. Check the duty profile

Daily distance, return to depot, shift pattern, grid connection, trailer. The profile check ranks BEV, e-trailer, hydrogen and diesel and derives the inputs for the calculator.

2. Run the numbers

Energy, tolls, maintenance, insurance, tax, THG credit, depreciation – per year and per kilometre. Break-even with residual value; every figure can be replaced with your own quote.

3. Plan the route and the diesel sale

Run your core routes against the charging parks, plan for overnight charging and depots. And set the date for selling the diesel – before the second generation of e-trucks ramps up.

IAA Transportation 2026: the wrap-up in three sentences

Range is solved, charging time is not

MAN eTGX 660 km, Volvo FH Aero Electric up to 700 km, eActros 600 500 km – all in series production or available to order. Megawatt charging was demonstrated, but Germany has only around 18 public MCS sites so far. The German federal government is launching 836 charging points at 124 motorway rest areas by 2030.

Diesel remains the residual-value anchor – with a generation change

92.1% of EU new registrations in the first half of 2026. New diesel drivetrains at Daimler and MAN turn the current generation into the previous one – and that affects residual value from the moment of announcement.

China has arrived

BYD, Windrose, Farizon, Sany and Sinotruk with dealer networks, parts warehouses and assembly in Europe, priced 20–30% below EU manufacturers (estimate). No residual-value history – buy only with a buy-back or residual-value guarantee.
