MAN TGX tractor unit – selling a tractor unit through truckoo

The tractor units you sell through truckoo

Through truckoo you sell tractor units of all common makes and configurations – standard units for long-haul, low liners for mega semi-trailers, heavy-haulage units as well as terminal and swap-body vehicles. Whether individually or as a package of several vehicles makes no difference to the listing.

  • Standard tractor unit for long-haul
  • Low liner for mega semi-trailers
  • Heavy-haulage tractor unit with increased gross train weight
  • Terminal and shunting tractor
  • Swap-body vehicle with auxiliary hydraulics
  • Tractor unit for construction site and tipper operation

Standard equipment counts for more here than on any other vehicle type: without a retarder and a long-haul cab, a tractor unit drops out of most dealers' search filters.

  • Mercedes-Benz Actros
  • MAN TGX
  • Scania R and S series
  • Volvo FH
  • DAF XF and XG
  • Iveco S-Way
  • Renault T series
  • Ford F-Max

How the sale works

The sale consists of four steps: list, receive bids, accept a bid, hand over. Until you accept a bid you can cancel at any time at no cost – and even after that you pay nothing.

Step 1

List your vehicle

Photograph the registration certificate, enter the mileage, take six mandatory photos. The listing process guides you through each photo. Around ten minutes.

Step 2

Receive bids

Every bid is binding and valid for a fixed period. You see all bids side by side, not just the highest.

Step 3

Accept a bid

If none suits, you don’t sell – at no cost. Once accepted, there is no renegotiation.

Step 4

Handover and payment

Handover at a partner workshop or collection from your premises. Then payout by instant bank transfer. Deregistration can be added as an optional service (from 49 €).

Market value

What makes your tractor unit valuable

Four factors determine the price: demand in the export markets together with export costs, the equipment, the year of manufacture and mileage, and the technical condition. With tractor units the book value is frequently above the market value – that is the point at which sellers are most often surprised.

Export markets and export costs

Goods find their way into almost every market even under sanctions – the route simply becomes more expensive. Exports to Central Asia and the Caucasus involve considerable transport and processing costs, and those costs reduce the dealer's margin and with it the purchase price. Conversely, a regional slump in demand can feed through: when large fleets based in Lithuania disposed of vehicles in three-figure numbers within a single quarter, demand for DAF in Eastern Europe fell noticeably.

Equipment

With tractor units there are features that are expected as standard: a retarder, a long-haul cab and sufficient engine power. If one of them is missing, the vehicle drops out of many dealers' search criteria and becomes considerably harder to place. Conversely, special cases with a large engine and a specific purpose – a Scania R750, for instance – are particularly interesting for a small but well-paying group of buyers.

Book value and the market

The book value of a tractor unit today is frequently above the market value. That is the point at which sellers are most often surprised – and it is not a matter for negotiation but a consequence of the general economic situation. Credit-financed logistics companies are shrinking their fleets, and every fleet disposed of pushes the price level down for everyone. If you can choose the moment, choose it.

Mileage and technical condition

The drivetrain, leak-tightness, remaining tyre tread and accident history each feed into the calculation separately. On top of the pure vehicle costs, the dealer has transport to their site, smart repair and the days in stock along with the financing costs. The standing days in particular are underestimated: every day in stock costs money, and a vehicle whose condition is unclear stands longer.

Why book value and listing price are not the market value

With tractor units there are two figures that lead sellers astray: the listing price and the book value. The listing price is a dealer's selling price with negotiating room built in. The book value comes from depreciation and has nothing to do with the market – today it regularly sits above it. Five items lie between the listing price and what a dealer can pay:

  • Transport to the dealer
  • Financing costs per day in stock
  • Smart repair and reconditioning
  • Dealer margin
  • Negotiating room

On special vehicles – large engines, a specific application – the days in stock weigh especially heavily, because the circle of buyers is small and the vehicle stands for longer. The difference with truckoo is not that these items disappear, but that several dealers calculate at the same time and you see the best result instead of a single one.

Even if the tractor unit is not perfect

Condition rules out no tractor unit. Even with engine or gearbox damage the circle of buyers stays large, because long-haul units are repaired all over the world. The only point on which dealers calculate cautiously as a matter of principle is frame damage – so name it explicitly instead of working around it.

Selling a tractor unit without a roadworthiness test

An expired roadworthiness test is no obstacle. You do not have to present the vehicle for testing or repair it – dealers factor the test in, and for export it is irrelevant anyway.

Engine or gearbox damage

Tractor units that are not driveable also find buyers. Describe the damage as precisely as possible; a known defect reduces the bid less than an unexpected one that comes to light at the handover.

High mileage

A million kilometres is no bar for a long-haul tractor unit. What matters is the service history, the condition of the drivetrain and whether the engine has already been overhauled – documented repair work is an argument for a higher price.

Accident damage

Accident-damaged vehicles are sold like any others. Enclose an expert report or repair invoices. Frame damage is the one item on which dealers always calculate cautiously – so state it explicitly.

Company lettering and wrapping

Lettering does not have to be removed before the sale; the buyer takes care of removing the wrap. Mention it anyway, because a full wrap can leave marks on the paintwork underneath.

Leased or financed vehicle

An ongoing contract does not stand in the way of a sale. truckoo obtains the settlement amount from the bank or the leasing company and offsets it against the purchase price – you receive the difference.

Who bids on your tractor unit

On truckoo, 1500+ verified dealers and exporters from 35+ countries submit bids. Every buyer is checked for proof of trade registration, VAT identification number and solvency before being approved. You yourself have a contract with none of them – your contractual partner is truckoo.

The difference from a classified ad is the number of calculations. With tractor units that is particularly effective, because demand varies strongly by region: a dealer selling into Romania pays a different price for the same vehicle than one selling into Scandinavia. You see both bids side by side, without having to do market research yourself.

Frequently asked questions about selling a tractor unit

What does it cost to sell a tractor unit?

For sellers, selling through truckoo is free of charge – completely and permanently. There is no listing fee, no brokerage commission and no deduction from the purchase price, not even when you accept a bid and actually sell.

How quickly are bids available?

As a rule, a few working days after the vehicle details are complete. Tractor units are the most actively traded vehicle type of all – so a correspondingly large number of dealers bid as soon as the equipment and condition have been fully recorded.

Do I have to accept a bid?

No. You see every bid and decide freely. If you accept none, no costs arise and the vehicle stays yours. There is no deadline by which you have to decide – only the individual bids are time-limited.

Who is my contractual partner in the sale?

truckoo. The sales contract, the payment and the processing all run through truckoo, not through the dealer who bids. You have a single point of contact, even if something needs clarifying after the handover.

When do I get my money?

On the day of handover. As soon as the partner on site has confirmed that the vehicle, keys and documents have been handed over in full, truckoo pays out by instant bank transfer. You do not have to chase your money and you do not have to pay anything in advance.

What equipment do I have to state?

Retarder, cab variant, engine power, transmission type, axle configuration and emissions standard. These six details decide which dealers will bid at all – a tractor unit without a retarder or a long-haul cab falls outside many buyers' search criteria.

Why is the bid below my book value?

Because book value and market value have nothing to do with each other. The book value comes from depreciation, the market value from supply and demand – and at present the book value for tractor units is regularly the higher of the two. That is not a matter for negotiation but a consequence of the market situation.

Can I sell several tractor units as a package?

Yes. Individual vehicles and smaller holdings go through the same listing process. For larger holdings or recurring disposals, fleet sales is the right route – there, vehicles are marketed as a bundle and you get a dedicated contact person.

List your tractor unit and receive bids

Ten minutes to create the listing, then you decide at your own pace. For sellers the sale is free of charge – even when you do sell.
