Tandem trailer – selling a trailer through truckoo

The trailers you sell through truckoo

Through truckoo you sell truck trailers of every design: tandem and turntable trailers, tipper and refrigerated trailers, tarpaulin trailers, container chassis, tanker and silo trailers as well as swap-body and low-loader trailers. Individual trailers without a matching rigid truck can be sold too.

  • Tandem trailers
  • Turntable trailers
  • Tipper trailers
  • Refrigerated trailers with cooling unit
  • Tarpaulin and curtainsider trailers
  • Container chassis
  • Tanker and silo trailers
  • Swap-body and terminal trailers
  • Low-loader trailers

Trailers are often valued together with the rigid truck as a complete unit. Sold separately, the trailer often brings more, because it reaches different buyers than the towing vehicle.

How the sale works

The sale consists of four steps: list, receive bids, accept a bid, hand over. Until you accept a bid you can cancel at any time at no cost – and even after that you pay nothing.

Step 1

List your vehicle

Photograph the registration certificate, enter the mileage, take six mandatory photos. The listing process guides you through each photo. Around ten minutes.

Step 2

Receive bids

Every bid is binding and valid for a fixed period. You see all bids side by side, not just the highest.

Step 3

Accept a bid

If none suits, you don’t sell – at no cost. Once accepted, there is no renegotiation.

Step 4

Handover and payment

Handover at a partner workshop or collection from your premises. Then payout by instant bank transfer. Deregistration can be added as an optional service (from 49 €).

Market value

What makes your trailer valuable

Four factors determine the price: the body type, the condition of frame, floor and braking system, the remaining validity of the roadworthiness inspection and regional demand. Trailers barely follow the economic cycle, but they are highly seasonal – tipper trailers move better in spring than in November.

Type of build and regional demand

Trailers are traded predominantly on a regional basis, because transport to the buyer is expensive in relation to the value of the vehicle. That makes local demand more important than it is for rigid trucks. Tipper and platform trailers are in demand in construction and agriculture, swap-body trailers in general cargo transport, refrigerated trailers in the food sector.

Frame, floor and braking system

The frame, floor, side boards and braking system determine the price. Rust on the frame is the most common reason for a substantial deduction, because it limits the remaining service life. On tipper trailers the hydraulics are added to that, on curtainside trailers the curtain together with the roof bows.

Roadworthiness test and documents

A trailer with a valid roadworthiness test is immediately usable for European buyers and fetches correspondingly more. If it is missing, that is no bar – the buyer allows for it. What matters are complete documents: registration certificate part I and part II, the most recent roadworthiness test or safety inspection report and, if available, the service book for the braking system.

Season

Trailers are strongly seasonal. Tipper and platform trailers sell considerably better in spring than in late autumn, because that is when construction and agriculture do their buying. If you can choose the moment, sell before the season, not after it.

Why the listing price is not your price

Trailers are traded largely regionally, and that is exactly what makes listing prices useless as a benchmark: a price from an advertisement 400 kilometres away says little about your trailer, because transport there is expensive in relation to the vehicle's value. Added to this are the usual five items between selling price and purchase price:

  • Transport to the dealer
  • Financing costs per day in stock
  • Smart repair and reconditioning
  • Dealer margin
  • Negotiating room

Because the transport share is so high on a trailer, the decisive factor is often not the dealer with the best margin but the one with the shortest journey. Obtaining several bids at once therefore brings more here than with any other vehicle type.

Even if the trailer is not perfect

Condition rules out no trailer. Frame, floor and braking system determine the price; the year of manufacture hardly does. Trailers of twenty years and more are traded regularly as long as the load-bearing parts are sound. What matters is that you name any damage when you create the listing – a visible defect in the bid is better than an unexpected one at handover.

Selling a trailer without a roadworthiness test

An expired roadworthiness test is no obstacle. The buyer factors it in; for the transport to the buyer a temporary licence plate is used or the trailer is loaded.

Rust on the frame or floor

Rust on the frame limits the remaining service life and is priced in accordingly. The trailer can still be sold. Photograph the affected areas – visible damage in the bid is better than unexpected damage at the handover.

Defective braking system or hydraulics

Defects in the braking system or the tipping hydraulics do not rule out a sale. They do belong in the vehicle details, however, because they affect whether the trailer can be rolled and therefore how it is collected.

High age

Trailers are still traded at twenty years and more. What matters is the frame, the floor and the braking system, not the year of manufacture in the registration document.

Company lettering

Lettering does not have to be removed. Mention it, because marks can remain on the curtain and the paintwork that the buyer would otherwise price in afterwards.

Leased or financed vehicle

An ongoing contract does not stand in the way of a sale. truckoo obtains the settlement amount from the bank or the leasing company and offsets it against the purchase price – you receive the difference.

Who bids on your trailer

On truckoo, 1500+ verified dealers and exporters from 35+ countries submit bids. Every buyer is checked for proof of trade registration, VAT identification number and solvency before being approved. You yourself have a contract with none of them – your contractual partner is truckoo.

The difference from a classified ad is the number of calculations – and with a trailer, above all, the distance. Because transport is expensive in relation to the vehicle's value, the dealer with the shortest journey often decides it. Through truckoo you reach the dealers in your region and the national ones at the same time, without searching yourself.

Frequently asked questions about selling a trailer

What does it cost to sell a trailer?

For sellers, selling through truckoo is free of charge – completely and permanently. There is no listing fee, no brokerage commission and no deduction from the purchase price, not even when you accept a bid and actually sell.

Which types of trailer do you take?

Tandem and turntable trailers, tipper, refrigerated, curtainside and container trailers, tank and silo trailers as well as swap-body and low-loader trailers. Make and age are irrelevant – what counts is the frame, the floor and the braking system.

Do I have to accept a bid?

No. You see every bid and decide freely. If you accept none, no costs arise and the vehicle stays yours. There is no deadline by which you have to decide – only the individual bids are time-limited.

Who is my contractual partner in the sale?

truckoo. The sales contract, the payment and the processing all run through truckoo, not through the dealer who bids. You have a single point of contact, even if something needs clarifying after the handover.

When do I get my money?

On the day of handover. As soon as the partner on site has confirmed that the vehicle, keys and documents have been handed over in full, truckoo pays out by instant bank transfer. You do not have to chase your money and you do not have to pay anything in advance.

How long does it take until the first bid?

As a rule, a few working days after the vehicle details are complete. With trailers it also depends on how many dealers are active in your region – the transport distance counts for more here than with any other type of vehicle.

Do I have to deliver the trailer myself?

As a rule, no. With more than 250 partner locations in Germany, the handover can usually be arranged close to you. Alternatively, the buyer collects it from your premises; if the trailer can no longer be rolled, it will be loaded.

Can I sell the trailer and the rigid truck together?

Yes, but it rarely pays off. Valued as a combination, the price follows the weaker of the two vehicles. Listed separately, the rigid truck and the trailer reach different buyers – and together often fetch more.
