Sell a truck abroad: exporters bid too, truckoo handles the sale.

Export, customs, licence plates and transport are the buyer's responsibility; the sales contract, payment and collection run through truckoo. You are selling in Germany, not to a buyer abroad.

What exporting means for you – and what it does not

The difference between selling to a German dealer and selling to an exporter lies with the buyer, not with you. In both cases your contractual partner is truckoo. You do not issue a tax-free export invoice, you do not apply for an export licence plate, and you do not need an entry certificate.

  • Your contractual partner and the party liable for payment is truckoo, not the exporter
  • No export licence plate, no customs papers, no entry certificate for you
  • Collection in Germany – at your premises or at a partner workshop
  • Euro 3 to Euro 5 and high mileage are in demand for export
  • COC papers and complete documents widen the circle of buyers

Anyone selling directly to a buyer abroad carries the burden of proof themselves: checking the VAT identification number, the entry certificate, copies of identity documents, powers of attorney – and the risk that the tax office will demand 19 per cent in arrears if there are gaps. Through truckoo that does not arise, because the sale takes place within Germany.

How the sale works

The sale consists of four steps: list, receive bids, accept a bid, hand over. Until you accept a bid you can cancel at any time at no cost – and even after that you pay nothing.

Step 1

List your vehicle

Photograph the registration certificate, enter the mileage, take six mandatory photos. The listing process guides you through each photo. Around ten minutes.

Step 2

Receive bids

Every bid is binding and valid for a fixed period. You see all bids side by side, not just the highest.

Step 3

Accept a bid

If none suits, you don’t sell – at no cost. Once accepted, there is no renegotiation.

Step 4

Handover and payment

Handover at a partner workshop or collection from your premises. Then payout by instant bank transfer. Deregistration can be added as an optional service (from 49 €).

Special feature with export: nothing changes for you in the process. The exporter collects the vehicle in Germany and takes care of the export licence plate and customs himself. You cannot see from a bid whether a dealer or an exporter is bidding – you only see the price.

Market value

What your truck is worth on the export market

Many trucks that barely find buyers in Germany because of their age, emissions standard or mileage still have a value abroad – often a higher one than at home. Which market pays depends on the emissions standard, make, body and condition.

The emissions standard decides the market

Euro 6 stays in the EU. Euro 5 goes to Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. Euro 3 and Euro 4 go to North Africa, the Middle East and West Africa, where emissions requirements play no part. A Euro 3 truck that is a problem in Germany is a sought-after vehicle there.

Make and spare parts supply

Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, MAN and Scania are traded worldwide, because workshop networks and spare parts are available everywhere. Unusual makes and rare engine variants fetch less on the export market – not because of their quality, but because of how easily they can be repaired locally.

Robustness before comfort

Export buyers pay for leaf suspension, simple electronics, all-wheel drive and high ground clearance. A retarder, a long-haul cab and driver assistance systems, which make the price in Europe, count for little there. Tippers, chassis and flatbeds are more sought after than high-volume box bodies.

Documents and COC

To register the vehicle in the destination country, the exporter needs complete documents: registration certificate part I and part II, the COC or a data sheet, and roadworthiness test reports. A vehicle without a COC is not tradeable for many exporters – that depresses the price more than any dent.

Why selling directly abroad is risky

Anyone who sells to a buyer abroad themselves takes on tasks for which exporters have entire departments. Between your effort and the purchase price lie:

  • Proof of tax exemption: VAT identification number, entry certificate, copies of identity documents
  • Export licence plate and insurance
  • Deregistration and handing over the documents step by step
  • Payment risk with advance payment or a cheque
  • Renegotiation at collection

Through truckoo you sell within Germany. The payout arrives by instant bank transfer on the day of handover, and whether the vehicle then travels to Romania or Morocco is no longer your concern.

Who bids on your truck for export

On truckoo, 1500+ verified dealers and exporters from 35+ countries place bids. Every exporter is checked for their trade licence, VAT identification number and creditworthiness before being approved – and pays truckoo, not you.

Exporters are specialists for one target market: one supplies haulage companies in Romania, the next construction firms in Morocco, the third transport operators in West Africa. Each of them knows their own demand, their transport costs and their registration rules – and bids accordingly. Because several exporters bid at the same time as German dealers, you get the price of the market in which your truck is worth the most, without having to know that market yourself.

What exporters want to know
  • Emissions standard and date of first registration
  • Is a COC document or an EC data sheet available?
  • Axle configuration, suspension, all-wheel drive
  • Condition of the engine, gearbox and frame – mileage is secondary
  • Location for collection

Frequently asked questions about selling a truck abroad

Do I have to issue a tax-free invoice when selling abroad?

No. Your contractual partner is truckoo in Germany; the sale is a domestic transaction under the usual VAT rules. The export and its tax treatment are the exporter's responsibility.

Who takes care of the export licence plate and customs?

The buyer. They collect the vehicle in Germany and arrange the export licence plate, insurance, customs declaration and transport themselves. You hand over the vehicle, the keys and the documents – nothing more.

Do I get more on the export market than at home?

Often yes, especially for Euro 3 to Euro 5, high mileage or vehicles without a valid roadworthiness test. For young Euro 6 vehicles, European dealers usually pay more. You do not have to judge that yourself: both groups bid on the same vehicle and you see the result.

How do I tell whether an exporter is reputable?

You cannot – and you do not have to. Every bidder on truckoo is vetted before being approved, and the payment comes from truckoo, not from the exporter. The risk of dubious buyers, which is real when selling directly abroad, does not arise.

Who takes care of the deregistration?

Deregistration is not part of the standard process – but you can book it with truckoo as an additional service: 49 € for the deregistration, or 149 € (vehicles built before 2015) and 179 € (from 2015 onwards) including removal of the toll OBU. We then handle the deregistration after the handover and you receive the deregistration certificate. The vehicle leaves Germany on the buyer's export licence plate.
