Selling a truck: dealer buy-out, a listing on mobile.de or TruckScout24, an auction at Autobid.de or Ritchie Bros., or a platform – price, effort and risk compared.
There are four common ways to sell a used truck: a direct buy-out by a dealer, a listing on a portal such as mobile.de or TruckScout24, an auction at Autobid.de or Ritchie Bros. – or a platform where verified dealers submit binding bids. All four work. They differ in who sets the price, how much work stays with you and who carries the risk.
You call a dealer, he inspects the truck, names a price and buys it directly. It is fast and simple: one contact, one price, one contract.
The catch is how the price is set. A single dealer calculates for his own sales channel. If he buys for the German market, a Euro 5 tipper is worth little to him – to an exporter the same tipper can be worth considerably more. You always negotiate against exactly one calculation.
Classified portals reach many interested buyers. But you do the selling yourself: you set the price, write the ad, answer calls and messages, arrange viewings, negotiate and handle contract, payment and handover.
That takes time and carries risk. Many enquiries come from people who only want to push the price down, and you have to check yourself whether a payment is safe. On top of that: if the asking price is too high, the truck sits for weeks; if it is too low, you give money away. Depending on the portal and package, listing fees also apply.
Autobid.de auctions vehicles to trade buyers, on site at auction centres and online. Vehicles are usually inspected beforehand. If the highest bid stays below the asking price, the vehicle goes into reserve and the consignor decides whether to sell.
Ritchie Bros. specialises in construction equipment and trucks and traditionally auctions without reserve: the vehicle goes to the highest bidder on auction day, however high the bid. In return, the sale on a fixed date is certain. If you want a minimum price, you have to choose a different sales channel from the provider.
Auctions create competition between bidders. But they are tied to dates, the vehicle often has to go to an auction yard, and seller fees apply depending on the contract.
On truckoo you list the truck once: registration document, mileage, condition and photos. You receive the free valuation within 24 hours. After that, 1,500+ verified dealers and exporters from 35+ countries bid bindingly – either in a blind auction with sealed bids over a fixed period or in a digital negotiation with bid and counter-offer. The two can be combined: if the vehicle does not sell in the blind auction, it goes back in with a buy-now price.
Unlike an auction without reserve, you decide whether to accept a bid. Unlike a listing, you do not negotiate with strangers: your contractual partner is truckoo, not the buyer. Contract, payment and collection run through truckoo, and the sale is free of charge for sellers.
The dealer fits if the truck has to go immediately and price is secondary. The listing fits if you have time, know the market price well and want to handle enquiries yourself. The auction fits if you need a fixed sale date and accept an open result. The platform fits if you want competition among many buyers without giving up control over the price.
The routes are not mutually exclusive: get a dealer offer and compare it with the bids on the platform. Then you know what your truck is really worth.
